The Opening Round

The twelve lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the twelve lowest-seeded at-large teams play twelve games for places in the bracket of 64. Each winner takes the seed shown.

How the field is chosen

The field comes from Agatha's college basketball power rankings: each team's rating is the number of points Agatha expects it to beat an average Division I team by on a neutral floor.

Each of the 32 conferences gets one automatic bid, and it goes to the conference's highest-rated eligible team. The 44 at-large bids go to the highest-rated eligible teams left. From its tenth game on, a team with a losing record gets no at-large bid.

All 76 teams are seeded in rating order, four to each seed from 1 to 16. The twelve lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the twelve lowest-seeded at-large teams play in the Opening Round, each against the team next to it in the seed list.

This is a prediction, and it changes through the season: the ratings move with every game played. Teams new to Division I, and teams the NCAA has ruled out of the tournament, are left out.

Not eligible this season, each still moving up to Division I: Mercyhurst Lakers, New Haven Chargers, West Florida Argonauts and West Georgia Wolves.

Not eligible this season under an NCAA postseason ban: Detroit Mercy Titans.
